What is omar?
OMAR is an alternative, hands on, strength-based psychotherapeutic intervention
designed to resolve psychological distress following trauma or other significant life-altering events.
It is a time-limited intervention, consisting of 6-8 sessions to treat less severe anxiety or
adjustment disorders and 12-18 sessions to treat posttraumatic stress, post-concussive, and
other more severe disorders. In addition to utilizing contemporary Western psychological
interventions, including systematic desensitization and Gestalt anger work, OMAR applies thinking
and practices of ancient Oriental philosophy used for more than a thousand years for the rehabilitation of
the minds and bodies of wounded warriors.

how does omar work?
OMAR is a mind-body intervention, meaning that just as the mind cannot fully recover in the face of a broken body, the body cannot totally recover without recognizing the psychological implications of a client’s incapacity. Post-trauma, a person typically experiences a sudden loss of personal power, or Behavior Potential, or the client finds themselves living in a different world— a smaller world reflecting both their psychological and physical limitations and incapacity. Following trauma, OMAR practices assist clients in restoring that lost Behavior Potential by teaching them how to effectively re-engage in the routines of their community or learning new social practices to meet those needs.

who is omar for?
A person who has experienced a sudden psychological trauma or other life-altering event often loses the ability to participate in their daily routines and social practices in the same way they did before their event. Many patients seeking psychological care post-trauma suffer from symptoms of anxiety, depression, insomnia, anger, stress, physical debilitation, and the general feeling of being “stuck” or “frozen" or simply not feeling like themselves anymore. Standard Western psychology typically treats these symptoms with varied forms of talk psychotherapy and both psychotropic and pain medications. The OMAR intervention works, without relying on medications, to get clients back to who they were the day before their accident.
OMAR is not a traditional talk therapy intervention. It is a cross-cultural practice that highlights the sensei-student relationship and teaches skills that require hard work and practice. Within the first 15 minutes of practicing the OMAR routines, clients will begin to feel relief. By the end of the course of treatment, clients will see a decrease in their presenting symptoms and often a complete remission of their initial diagnoses.
